The power of the sea
It is well known that sea water has numerous benefits for our health.
The sea has always been attracting us, having an improving effect on our mood and a positive effect on our immune system. Surfers, swimmers, divers and people who live in coastal areas know very well that the sea stimulates our body and promotes the feeling of well-being.
The main ingredient of sea water is salt: on average, sea water has 3.5% of salt (sodium chloride). In other words, in one litre of sea water, there are 35 grams of salt. Apart from the salt, sea water also contains small quantities of other elements such as magnesium, calcium and potassium. Thalassotherapy (or otherwise sea therapy) is a treatment method which uses sea water and sea-based products made from algae, marine salt, mud, seaweed, and sea water to address some health related problems.
Benefits
The benefits of sea water are many:
1. Treatment for skin conditions
The ingredients of sea water, especially the minerals that are contained in the water like magnesium, calcium and potassium, are helping with skin problems. The salt that is contained in sea water reduces the moisture of the skin and regulates the overproduction of oil that leads to clogged pores.
2. Natural mouthwash
Sea water cleanses the gums and minimizes bad breath. We could use sea salt as an ingredient to make a totally natural mouthwash: we combine sea salt with warm water in a glass and swish the mixture around our mouth for 30-60 seconds as with any mouthwash. We could also add a drop of peppermint extract for a fresh minty feeling.
3. Gentle exfoliant properties
Sea salt has exfoliating properties that make it an ideal scrub for our body and face. The salt minerals help to open pores for deeper cleansing and they increase blood flow so that our skin better absorbs the moisturizer and other treatments. Some attention is needed in people with sensitive skins, where it is better to avoid face scrub because the skin there is thinner and is more easily aggravated.
4. Natural calming effects
Sea water has a calming effect on our mood. Visiting the beach is considered an effective medicine for people with stress, because sea water boosts positive feelings and helps with insomnia.
5. Breathing improvement
Sea water helps to keep nasal passages clear and further protects lungs. Therefore, breathing near the sea and swimming is beneficial for people who suffer from asthma, nasal congestion and other respiratory problems.
